Toncoin TON Mainnet Launches Sub-Second Upgrade, Aims for Faster Consensus by April 7
The Open Network (TON) has initiated its Sub-Second upgrade, a major consensus-layer overhaul designed to drastically reduce confirmation times and improve responsiveness for on-chain applications. Announced on April 2, the rollout follows a successful bug bounty phase and is now entering a three-stage activation process.
Validator nodes completed mandatory upgrades by March 31, paving the way for an April 2 vote to implement new consensus rules on the basechain. A second critical vote scheduled for April 7 will fully activate the fast consensus mechanism across both the basechain and masterchain. Validators will maintain a state of heightened readiness through April 12 to address any potential deployment issues.
This upgrade is poised to transform the user experience by slashing current five-second block times to sub-second latency while maintaining the network's signature low fees. This positions TON as a prime contender for payment-centric applications and high-throughput use cases, a strategic move as blockchain interoperability becomes increasingly important in the digital asset ecosystem.
